Easy Knitting Patterns - Knit Christmas Gifts
I wanted to set out some basic knitting instructions as a refresher so here it is. Ordinarily, stitches are knitted in the same order in every row, and the wales of the fabric run parallel and vertically along the fabric. When you are ready to get started, you will need a tape measure which will help you keep track of the length of a work.
In securing the previous stitch in a wale, the next stitch can pass through the previous loop either from below or above. This is used to great effect in lace knitting, which consists of making patterns and pictures using such holes, rather than with the stitches themselves. Heathered yarns contain small amounts of fibre of different colours, while tweed yarns may have greater amounts of different coloured fibres. It is a good idea to keep the knitting yarn draped over the right forefinger, this keeps it to the back of the work too.
The two extra stitches add balance to the pattern. In plying, two or more yarns are spun together, almost always in the opposite sense from which they were spun individually; for example, two Z-twist yarns are usually plied with an S-twist. Knitting clubs have sprung up in recent years which may be worth investigating if there is no one else who can teach the art of knitting.
So, if you want to slow down, and find meaning in your life again, try knitting. Be sure to try using other available resources, such as local craft and hobby stores.
