In this article, I will attempt to explain some of the basic knitting stitches and everything they encompass. I wanted to set out some basic knitting instructions as a refresher so here it is. Knitting follows structures.
It can be a humbling experience to the perfectionist. If the fibers are first aligned by combing them, the yarn is smoother and called a worsted; by contrast, if the fibers are carded but not combed, the yarn is fuzzier and called woolen-spun. Sock knitting machines are antiques and they are not made any more. A wale can split into two or more wales using increases, most commonly involving a yarn over.
In spinning, the fibers are twisted so that the yarn resists breaking under tension; the twisting may be done in either direction, resulting in an Z-twist or S-twist yarn. Repeat the whole procedure till you transfer all stitches from left needle to right needle. I then lay the knitting on a flat clean towel.
