Once you learn these two stitches you will find everything else is just a variation of the knit and purl stitches. When knitting by hand, the artist also controls the colors, needles, and overall design of the final product. Knitting needles are made of different materials such as steel, plastic or bamboo.
The first and most common type consists of two slender, straight sticks tapered to a point at one end, and with a knob at the other end to prevent stitches from slipping off. It has slowed somewhat, but its enduring nature is a testament to both the relaxation it bestows on the practitioner, and the joy of craftsmanship. Laces are provided from Iceland and Estonia. In plying, two or more yarns are spun together, almost always in the opposite sense from which they were spun individually; for example, two Z-twist yarns are usually plied with an S-twist.
The darning needle is used in duplicate stitch (also known as Swiss darning), while the crochet hook is also essential for repairing dropped stitches and some specialty stitches such as tufting. One of the earliest known examples of knitting was finely decorated cotton socks found in Egypt in the end of the first millennium AD. A baby blanket is the perfect place to practice more complex pattern stitches. Now count the stitches to make sure you haven't dropped any and turn the work around putting the knitting needle with the stitches on in your left hand to start the next row.
Even if you're a pretty proficient knitter, this isn't the time to learn a new technique or work with a skinny fingering-weight yarn that will take forever to knit up. Knit it like you would knit any stitch.
