Understanding Knitting Needles
Knitters were first believed to have begun their craft in the first few centuries AD. In this article, I will attempt to explain some of the basic knitting stitches and everything they encompass. When you are ready to get started, you will need a tape measure which will help you keep track of the length of a work.
There are actually hundreds of combinations of stitch patterns. When you complete a lovely, warm sweater made with your own hands, you can proudly wear it and explain that you knitted it yourself. In the more complex double knitting, two or more yarns alternate repeatedly within one row and all the yarns must be carried along the row, as seen in Fair Isle sweaters. It is a good idea to keep the knitting yarn draped over the right forefinger, this keeps it to the back of the work too.
The second type of knitting needles are straight, double-pointed knitting needles (also called "dpns"). To compete with the speed of the new knitting machines, many of the cottage industries started to knit garments in flat pieces which were sewn together; they worked piecemeal. Most Western-style knitters follow either the English style (in which the yarn is held in the right hand) or the Continental style (in which the yarn is held in the left hand).
You watch it come to life as you go, and little by little, your knitting becomes reality. But, that's the essence of knitting.
