I wanted to set out some basic knitting instructions as a refresher so here it is. Sock-knitting machines are used to make socks. Knitting has become very popular in recent years.
With knitting, there is a TON of information, and no matter how often you knit, or how much you think you know, there is always something new. In the knit stitch on the left, the next (red) loop passes through the previous (white) loop from below, whereas in the purl stitch (right), the next stitch enters from above. The lower red course is knit into the white row below it and is itself knit on the next row; this produces stockinette stitch. On the right side, the visible portions of the loops are the verticals connecting two rows, arranged in a grid of V shapes.
This produces a reversible fabric with raised horizontal ridges on each side of the work. Knitted garments became fashionable for the wealthy upper class, and silk gloves and stockings were highly prized. But it is all part of the process, and most knitters, no matter how goal-oriented in their daily lives, face this part of the knitting experience with cool composure and aplomb. Of these types, wool is generally favored for knitting, chiefly owing to its superior elasticity, warmth and (sometimes) felting; however, wool is generally less convenient to clean and some people are allergic to it.
Even a beginner can make a simple scarf with novelty yarn in just a few hours, and have it look just fantastic. You will have only one new stitch from two.
